RES MAR 16

OFFICE

February 29, 1916.

105

Sir:-

I am directed by Secretary Sir E.Grey to acknowledge the receipt of your letter No 6512/1916

of the 18th instant, enquiring whether the purchase money for certain Belgian window glass which Messrs.

Van Ommeren desire to ship to Hong Kong has been

deposited in a Bank in the United Kingdom.

In reply, I am to transmit to you herewith a

copy of a note and enclosure from the Danish

Kinister, in which the circumstances attending this

transaction are set forth. * Secretary Bonar Law

will see that the responsibility for the evasion of

the regulations of His Majesty's Government rests

with the late Mr Funch, formerly British Vice Consul

at Copenhagen, who subsequently committed suicide.

Mr Bonar Law will no doubt agree that in the peculiar circunstances Sir E.Grey had no option but to authorise the shipment, and he trusts that the

Governor of Hong Kong will be instructed to allow

importation.

I am,

sir.

Your most obedient,

humble Servant,

The Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office.

Alan
